Cheshire East Leader apologises to Crewe Town Council

Conservative Leader Forced to Apologise

At the Cheshire East Council meeting on Thursday 10th April 2014, newly elected Labour councillor Kevin Hickson challenged Cllr Michael Jones over derogatory remarks he had made about Crewe Town Council and the Crewe Town Clerk.

There is an unwritten rule that councillors do not name and make personal attacks on council employees. Part of the reason for this is that council employees are unable to respond to such attacks.

The disgraceful Conservative attacks on Crewe Town Council were continued by Cllr Jacquie Weatherill, who was immediately upbraided by the Mayor when she named and made factually incorrect comments about the Crewe Town Clerk.

Cllr Kevin Hickson, Labour Councillor for Crewe West said, “Since the creation of Crewe Town Council last year Cllr Michael Jones has consistently sought to undermine their work culminating in this latest attack on the Town Clerk. This is utterly inappropriate and unprofessional. While we welcome the apology the proof will be in how he conducts himself from now on. Local electors in Crewe are rightly dismayed by his antics, no doubt a contributory factor in the Tory collapse in the recent Crewe West by-election.”

Labour Group Leader Cllr David Newton, said, “I am pleased that Cllr Jones has apologised and I hope that he will now adopt a more positive and co-operative attitude in his dealings with Crewe Town Council.”
